During her address to the public, McDougall outlined several priorities, reiterating her goal to support the young people by ensuring that they are well-equipped with the necessary skills and support to create a future for themselves without leaving the country. She noted that there needs to be a stronger path that leads to employment for the youth.
“The next chapter of youth development is not just about funding opportunities and funding education; it is about creating a clear pathway from education to opportunity. Our message must always be that young people do not have to leave Roseau North. Young people do not have to leave Dominica for better opportunities, because when our young people become more employable, employment will follow,” stated Ashma McDougall.
She further added, “And when we talk about employment, we must delve into something deeper. We must go further! We are building a society where all young people will be job ready. Let's go one floor higher, we are building businesses, creating opportunities and growing wealth within our communities.”
The Labour candidate promoted flagship projects undertaken by the Government of Dominica, explaining that they play an important role in creating opportunities for the youth and stirring up the economy in general.
Moreover, addressing fisherfolk in Fond Cole, Bath Estate and Pottersville, she promised support to increase value in the fishing industry.
“And to my hard-working fishermen in Fond Cole and Bath Estate and Pottersville, who rise before dawn, who understand that the future of the fishing industry lies not only in catching more fish, but in creating greater value. We have your back!” she pledged.
McDougall noted that the goal remains the same for every sector, stating that there is no shortage of talent and ambition, however, support systems need to improve in order to achieve economic transformation in Dominica.
“Across every community, across every sector, the message is the same. There isn't a lack of talent. There is not a lack of ambition,” explained the economist who went to emphasise, “And that is why we must continue to expand the small business landscape of Roseau North and of Dominica. That is why we must transform these ideas from paper to enterprises in motion. Because when we empower small businesses, when we unleash entrepreneurship, when we support those who are willing to take risks, we create value.”
McDougall also sees opportunities in the constituency’s tourism sector, stating that future investment and development in areas such as Fond Cole, Rose Garden and Woodbridge Bay to Roseau Market beachfront will unlock that untapped tourism potential.
Concluding her speech, the Roseau North candidate pledged to move away from politics and focus on progress, execution, unity.
