Earthworks for Dominica’s first Class 1 track facility at Pointe Rounde are set to begin as funding and planning processes near completion.
Dominica: The Government of Dominica has announced that it is pushing ahead with its development plans for its first Class 1 synthetic track and field facility at Pointe Rounde in Portsmouth, sharing that it held meaningful discussions with the track installation company, Mondo, and earthworks are scheduled to commence soon.
This announcement was made by the Minister of State in the Ministry of Sports, Oscar George, who shared that the project will also include the construction of a swimming pool as well as other amenities to complement it.
Minister Oscar George further revealed that the Mondo has also assured the Government that all the internal processes, including the funding for this project will be concluded in the next two months.
Last week we held discussions with Mondo which is the firm engaged by World Athletics to do the actual installation of the track and assurances were given that by late June into July we will see the conclusion of the internal processes alongside the Qatar Development Fund who will be actually providing the funding for the installation of the track,” stated Minister Oscar George.
According to him, the Government of Dominica is taking the necessary measures to facilitate the track’s installation, including preparing the site by conducting numerous studies and tests as well as developing a master plan for the point rung area, which George announced it to be in the finalization stage.
Moreover, Cabinet also instituted a steering committee to ensure strict oversight and seamless coordination with World Athletics and other agencies for a timely execution of the project.
The Sports Minister went on to reaffirm the Government’s commitment to enhancing sports infrastructure and investing in the youth sports development in the country. George asserted that the construction of the national track and field facility “remains top priority for us in government given the tremendous opportunities it will create for our young athletes.”
This state-of-the-art facility is being constructed under the World Athletics "Project 10" initiative, through a joint collaboration between the Dominica Athletics Association (DAA), World Athletics, and the Qatar Development Fund.
