Dominica has allocated 99 residential lots at reduced prices, helping young people access affordable land and build homes.
Dominica: The Minister of Finance, Economic Development, Climate Resilience and Social Security, Dr. Irving McIntyre, highlighted a significant housing initiative undertaken by the Government of Dominica as part of its continued efforts to expand home ownership opportunities to the young people in the country.
Presenting the 2026/2027 National Budget in Parliament last week, the Minister of Finance reported that the Government has allocated 99 residential lots at significantly reduced prices to give the young Dominicans access to affordable lands.
The Minister noted that lands in Warner, Jimmit, Hillsborough Garden, Cotton Hill, Grand Bay and Plat Ma Pierre, which were originally valued at $10.00 and $12.00 per square foot, were sold as low as $5.00 per square foot.
These significant discounts have resulted in major savings for our young people who now have the opportunity to build homes of their own, explained the Minister.
He highlighted that the Government of Dominica has also constructed more than 3,000 resilient housing units across the country so far, adding that more housing projects are underway as the procurement process for the East Communities and Campbell Relocation Housing Projects has officially commenced.
The Finance Minister explained that the Government has assumed the responsibility of making these investments as part of its deeper sense of duty and commitment to improving the lives of its citizens.
This Administration has never held the view that our mandate ends with the provision of services legally required of us. We know that we must also create conditions that allow families to build security, accumulate wealth and improve their quality of life. Bearing this mind, we have gone beyond the traditional role of Government to assist families—including middle-income families—in securing land, building homes and achieving greater economic stability" declared Dr. McIntyre.
The Government of Dominica announced that it will also proceed with the Opportunity Knocks 2% Housing Programme to make ownership more affordable, with some applications already approved.
