Dominica has announced an EC$10 million housing financing initiative for public officers earning EC$45,000 or less annually to support affordable home ownership
The Prime Minister of Dominica Dr. Roosevelt Skerrit has announced a new housing financing initiative for low income public officers. The initiative has been designed to help the people with low income own homes of their own in an affordable manner.
The Prime Minister made the announcement during a housing handover ceremony at Canefield East on September 4, 2026. According to the Prime Minister, he has tasked the Government Housing Board to contract a $10 million loan.
The loan will be made available to the eligible public officers of the country. The Prime Minister has explained that the public officers who earn $45,000 or less annually will be eligible for the financing support.

During the same event, the Prime Minister also talked about the government’s wider approach to housing. He also acknowledged that not every Dominican's financial position makes them eligible for a bank mortgage.
This is where the government support becomes crucial for the people of the island to become home owners. The Prime Minister highlighted that they are especially trying to target individuals who work diligently but are not able to access traditional sources of housing finances.
The Prime Minister of Dominica said that the housing programme is a part of the government’s broader policy to improve the living condition of the people in the country. He also said that home is a basic need which provides families with dignity, security and stability.
The government has handed over 11 houses to families in Canefield East Community. The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Melissa Poponne-Skerrit, highlighted that after today, over 200 more families will be receiving in nine communities across the island.
The Minister said, “This is a major milestone in the legacy of this Labor Party government.”
