Dominica boosts cocoa industry with post-harvest training | Dominica News

The training focused on fermentation, drying and post-harvest handling to help cocoa farmers improve bean quality, reduce losses and access higher-value markets

Dominica: The Government of Dominica continues its efforts to strengthen the cocoa industry in the country as it hosted a cocoa post-harvest and drying techniques training programme for the cocoa farmers in the southeast agricultural region.

This initiative aims to equip the farmers with the knowledge and practical skills to improve the production of cocoa across the island by ensuring it is of high quality which will also increase its value in the market. According to the Government, the training also aims to reduce post- harvest losses and create sustainable livelihoods for the farmers.

The techniques training took place last week and was led by experts from the Cuban Agricultural Mission and the Southeast Agricultural team. During the session, emphasis was placed on proper fermentation, precise drying and post-harvest handling.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Blue and Green Economy shared the announcement of this training on its official Facebook page, noting its importance to the farmers and the country.

It noted that following Hurricane Maria, the Southeast farmers had established cocoa as “resilient crop with strong potential for sustainable livelihoods,” and with the growth of the industry, the Government continues to prioritise post-harvest mastery to not only boost the value of local produce but also maximize profit for the local agro-processors.

As the sector continues to grow, strengthening post-harvest practices is key to producing premium-quality cocoa that can supply local agro-processors and support the development of value-added cocoa products. The training will help farmers improve the quality and marketability of their cocoa while also enhancing opportunities to access higher-value markets, explained the Ministry of Agriculture.

The Agriculture Ministry further reaffirmed its commitment, sharing that it remains committed to strengthening the cocoa sector.

“This initiative reflects the continued commitment to building a resilient and sustainable cocoa industry in Dominica through knowledge sharing, partnership, and farmer empowerment,” stated the Ministry.
