Dominica’s Agriculture Ministry is distributing free seedling trays and vegetable seeds to farmers affected by April flooding in eastern communities.
Dominica: The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Blue and Green Economy has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting farmers during the continuing recovery efforts, following the trough system in the East and Northeast communities. Starting this week, the Agriculture Ministry plans to distribute more than 100 seedling trays of a total of eight vegetables to the farmers in the East.
This initiative is made possible through the Ministry’s collaboration with the Chinese Agricultural Technical Mission at One Mile in Portsmouth. Together, the two parties aim to supply the affected farmers with a total of 120 seedling trays of a variety of vegetables, including cabbage, lettuce, bell peppers, pak choi, tomatoes, cauliflower and celery.
Moreover, to further complement the crop mix, farmers will also be provided with cucumber, pumpkin, watermelon, okra and string bean seeds.
This post-recovery programme will extend over the next three weeks as the Agriculture Ministry shared that it will launch a six-month long programme to help farmers “establish quick cash crops, diversify production, and generate fast income opportunities.” With this programme, the Ministry is targeting 200 of the farmers in the affected region.
According to the Ministry, this effort will greatly help the farmers and strengthen food security in Dominica, seeing as a majority of the crops were affected by the flooding caused by the weather system in the East region in late April 2026.
“Together, we are rebuilding stronger, empowering our farmers, and advancing national food security,” shared the Ministry of Agriculture.
