Dominica's geothermal plant is supplying 10.4MW to the national grid after technical adjustments, marking a key step toward full commercial operation.
Dominica: Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has reported that the geothermal power plant has achieved a significant milestone, with approximately 10.4MW of electricity in the national grid being supplied by it.
Prime Minister shared this during his press conference which took place on Thursday, July 2, 2026. During his address, Skerrit provided updates on many issues of national importance, including the progress made on voter ID cards, with issuance set to begin by the end of July; the support of US$500,000 provided to the Government of Venezuela to aid in its recovery efforts following the devastating twin earthquake; his participation at two conferences over the weekend; etc.

Upon delivering updates about the geothermal plant, Skerrit noted that concerns have been raised regarding the two-day power outages across Dominica which occurred on June 17 and 18. He explained that the technical team conducted investigations following the blackouts and clarified that the outages resulted from completely different technical circumstances, namely a coordination conflict.
I fully understand the concern caused by the island wide power outages experienced on June 17th and June 18th. Comprehensive investigations were immediately conducted by engineers and technical specialists, stated Prime Minister Skerrit.
He went on to explain, Although the two outages resulted from different circumstances, investigators identified a common issue involving the coordination of protection settings between the Battery Energy Storage System at Fond Cole and the geothermal power plant. The necessary adjustments have since been completed.
The Minister shared that the mandatory seven-day reliability test at Dominica's geothermal power plant was resumed on July 1st after the team resolved the technical issue and successfully tested the plant in June 30.
Dr. Skerrit disclosed that approximately 10.4MW of electricity is currently being supplied to the national grid by the power plant, describing the breakthrough as “another significant milestone as we move toward full commercial operation.”
The National Leader has urged the citizens to remain patient during this period, stating that the commissioning phase is highly complex and involves high-level technology, however, despite that, every identified issue is still being addressed promptly.
But I want also to be very transparent with you, the citizens and residents of our country, this remains a highly complex commissioning exercise involving sophisticated technology being integrated for the first time in the Caribbean. Commissioning is specifically designed to identify and resolve any remaining technical issues before commercial service begins. While no responsible engineer can guarantee that additional adjustments will never be required or occur, every issue identified is being addressed promptly and thoroughly, he assured.
Skerrit concluded by expressing confidence that the geothermal plant will greatly benefit the people of Dominica in the future by providing clean, reliable and affordable electricity.
