Dominica Hosts Historical 47th CITEL Telecoms Meeting | Dominica News DM

Dominica makes history as over 150 delegates convene in Portsmouth for the 47th CITEL meeting to discuss 5G deployment, satellite technology.

Dominica: More than 150 delegates are in Dominica for the Inter-American Telecommunication Commission.  

For the first time in history, the Commonwealth of Dominica is hosting the Inter-American Telecommunication Commission Meeting, currently taking place at the Intercontinental Hotel in Portsmouth on the 6th of April 2026. This meeting has gathered together representatives from 32 countries across the Americas who will engage in discussions that will help shape the future of telecommunications.  

The meeting is currently being attended by more than 150 individuals and approximately 190 remote delegates. Moreover, also in attendance are the Minister of State with responsibility for Telecommunications and Broadcasting, Chekira Lockhart-Hypolite; Chairman of ECTEL Board of Directors, Gregory Shillingford; Executive Secretary of the Inter-American Telecommunications Commission, Oscar Leon; and Vinicius Caram, the Chair of the Inter-American Telecommunications Commission, CITEL.  

Present at the opening ceremony, Minister of State Chekira Lockhart-Hypolite warmly welcomed the delegates to Dominica, wishing them a productive and successful meeting.  

It is a great honour and privilege on behalf of the government of the Commonwealth of Dominica to warmly welcome you all to the 47th meeting of the Permanent Consultative Committee of Radio Communications (PCC.II).

She further underscored the importance of this meeting, adding that Dominica hosting the event shows the country’s growing engagement globally.  

“We are especially proud that Dominica, a Caribbean nation committed to resilience, innovation and sustainable development, has the distinction of hosting this important meeting for the very first time. It is truly a milestone for our country and a reflection of our growing engagement in regional and international telecommunications processes.” 

In her address, she also highlighted a few areas the Government is exploring, adding that the country will actively engage with the regulators to learn and influence. She encouraged the adoption of new technologies such as 5G deployments, LEOS, D2D, and Wi-Fi 8, stating, “We want to ensure that we create the environment to be early adopters and the test bed for new and innovative technologies.”
