Dominica hosts Youth Rally promoting healthy living | Dominica News

“Stay away from drugs, alcohol and smoking, as one bad choice can derail your future and affect your goals,” urged Dr. Kyra Paul during the rally.

Dominica: The Ministry of Health, Wellness, and Social Services hosted an adolescent rally for the schools in Roseau City, encouraging the young students to reject substance abuse and to choose an active and healthy lifestyle for themselves.

On Wednesday, April 15, 2026, the Ministry of Health, Wellness and Social Services launched its first adolescent rally, engaging with the youth in Dominica and promoting healthy practices.

The adolescent rally was open to all schools around Roseau and was part of the various activities planned for this year’s Primary Health Week, also known as Dr. Carissa Etienne Primary Health Care Week, honouring the legacy of Dr. Carissa F. Etienne.

The Ministry of Health held an opening ceremony for the rally, where the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Wellness and Social Services, Dr. Kyra Paul, was present. The Permanent Secretary shared a few words with the youth during her opening speech, encouraging them to stay away from drugs, alcohol and other unhealthy practices that will endanger their future.

So today I challenge you, stay away from drugs, excessive alcohol and smoking. They derail your future. Don't follow the crowd. Make decisions that protect your life and your goals. Think long term. One bad choice can change everything, stated the Permanent Secretary.

She went further to advise the young boys and girls to engage in different physical activities and sports, noting that physical engagement plays a vital role in overall development, as it will promote a healthier lifestyle and boost their confidence.

Know your body, understand how it works and move your body daily. Participate in different sports such as football, netball, cricket, dancing and hiking—the options are limitless. Physical activity helps not just your body but your mood and confidence too, she added.

Dr. Kyra Paul also emphasised the importance of finding phone life and real-life balance, and eating healthy, urging the youth to “fuel your body properly and cut back on sugary drinks and snacks.”
