Dominica’s 2026 hunting season opens today, October 1, allowing regulated hunting of agouti, manicou and Gecarcinidae crabs through December 31.
Dominica: Dominica's Forestry, Wildlife and Parks Division of the Ministry of Environment, Rural Modernisation, Kalinago Upliftment and Constituency Upliftment, has announced the 2026 hunting season officially opened on Thursday, October 1, and run through December 31, 2026.
The Forestry and Parks Division has informed the hunters that they are permitted to hunt only crabs belonging to the Gecarcinidae family, agouti and manicou (opossum). However, the hunting of all birds, mountain chickens, iguanas, snakes and other protected species will remain strictly prohibited.
Moreover, the Division has shared that the selling and limited export of the permitted species will be allowed from October 2, 2026, to January 31, 2027, with each person allowed to export a maximum of 12 crabs, six agoutis and six manicous during the permitted export period.
The public has been reminded that hunting illegally, fishing in freshwater without a valid licence, or exporting wildlife illegally is an offence under the Forestry & Wildlife Act and a fine of EC $5,000 or more will be imposed on individuals found without the required documentation.
Those wishing to obtain a hunting license and export permit have been informed to visit the Forestry and Wildlife Division on Windsor Park Link Road. In addition, Sub-Treasuries in Portsmouth and Marigot will be providing hunting licenses only. A hunting license will cost EC$25, while an export permit will cost EC$10.
The Forestry, Wildlife and Parks Division has shared this announcement along with the instructions on its official Facebook page where it has urged the citizens to adhere to the regulations and hunt responsibly to safeguard the country's wildlife and resources.
"Please hunt responsibly, follow the regulations, and help protect Dominica’s wildlife and natural resources," wrote the Ministry.
