Dominica issues flood warning for East, watch for West | Dominica News

Flooding is occurring in Eastern communities after 4 inches of rain; residents urged to avoid rivers as more heavy showers are expected.

Dominica: The Dominica Meteorology Service has issued a flood warning for the Eastern communities in Dominica and a flood watch for the Western areas, alerting the general public to stay away from rivers and streams.

On Sunday, April 26, 2026, the Dominica Meteorology Service released a Severe Weather Bulletin, informing the citizens in Eastern Dominica that a flood is likely to occur in the area. In addition, the Meteorology Service has also issued a flood watch for the Western communities. Both the flood warning and flood watch are valid until 2 p.m.

For the Eastern communities, in the release, the Meteorology Service shared that over 100mm/ 4 inches of rainfall has been observed in north eastern to south eastern communities for the past three hours and that, as of now, flooding is occurring in some of those areas. Citizens have been urged to stay away from rivers and streams to ensure personal safety during this period.

According to the forecast, more rainfall is to be expected in the morning hours, causing rivers, ravines and other waterways to rapidly overflow and the roadways and low-lying bridges to be flooded. Moreover, officials caution that landslides and falling rocks are expected.

The released flood watch for the north western to south western communities will most likely be upgraded to a flood warning. As of now, the areas are receiving moderate to heavy showers of about 25mm / 1 inch, however, officials have informed the residents that there is a possibility of more rainfall accumulations of 1 to 2 inches to occur in the morning.

The Dominica Meteorology Services has informed the communities to the remain alert as it keeps sharing updates. Both the flood warning and flood watch notice has been shared by the Meteorology Services on Facebook.
