Dominica Launches ‘Dominica Moves’ Health Initiative | Dominica News

Dominica has launched the ‘Dominica Moves’ initiative to promote healthier lifestyles, prevent non-communicable diseases and support national wellness.

Dominica: The Government of Dominica has officially launched the "Dominica Moves" initiative as part of its greater efforts to promote healthier lifestyles and overall wellbeing among the people of Dominica, while reducing the prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the country. The initiative is a partnership between Dominica Ministry of Health, Wellness and Social Services and the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA).

The launching ceremony took place on the 18th of September 2026 and is part of the broader "Caribbean Moves" framework. This initiative is being launched alongside several other national initiatives focused on NCD prevention, including the Healthy Village Initiative, Red Heart Green Check, Fit for Life and the School Health Champions Programme.

According to the Ministry of Health, the Healthy Village Initiative will promote healthier lifestyles within communities, while Red Heart Green Check will help people identify healthier food choices. Fit for Life will use social media to encourage healthy choices, and the School Health Champions Programme will engage young people in promoting active lifestyles.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister of State in the Ministry of Health, Wellness and Social Services, Dr. Cassandra Williams, noted that the initiatives are significant in promoting healthier lifestyles, underscoring that health wellness should be accessible to everyone.

"Our challenge is not simply to help Dominicans live longer; it is to help our people live longer in good health. We want our older people to remain active and independent for as long as possible. We want parents healthy enough to enjoy their children and grandchildren. We want our working age population to be productive and well, and we want our children to grow up understanding that good health is something we build throughout life. That is why prevention must become everybody's business," Dr. Cassandra Williams declared.

Also present at the ceremony was Carlon Kirton, CARPHA's Communications Manager, who described the launch of Dominica Moves as an "important milestone" and reaffirmed the CARPHA's commitment to supporting the initiative.

"Dominica Moves, is therefore more than a programme; it's an opportunity for you to build a movement for the health of the whole nation. So CARPHA remains committed to supporting Dominica throughout its journey."

She further added, " We will continue to work alongside the Ministry and national partners by providing technical assistance, supporting implementation and scale up, strengthening monitoring and evaluation, sharing lessons and experiences from across the Caribbean and building the capacity needed to sustain this important initiative."

The Communications Manager concluded by congratulating the Government of Dominica for taking this important step and encouraging the citizens of Dominica to "move more, eat healthier and build a healthier Dominica."
