Law Week 2026 in Dominica focuses on property rights, succession law, generational wealth, and copyright protection for local music creators.
Dominica: The Dominica Bar Association has officially launched Law Week 2026, with a series of events set to take place between May 23 to May 30, 2026, under the central theme “Legacy, the Law and You.”
Led by Bar Association President Noelize Knight-Didier, this year's program focuses heavily on how the law can protect property rights, support local creators, and help citizens preserve wealth for future generations.
With this year’s theme being ‘Legacy, the Law and You’, we will focus on property rights and how do we preserve them and secure them, not just for yourself and earning an income, but for future generations as well, announced President Noelize Knight-Didier during a radio broadcast session.
She added that the Bar Association will host gala education sessions throughout the week where the general public will get knowledge on succession and probate law.
To complement this, the Association conducted a high school public speaking competition on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, at the Prevo Cinemall in Roseau, with Dominica Grammar School taking first place, Portsmouth Secondary School second and Arthur Waldron SDA Academy securing third place.
The topic for this competition was “Mother Has, Father Has, God Bless the Child Who Has His Own – Is Generational Wealth Building a Legacy or a Sense of Entitlement?” where the students engaged in important legal, social, and financial issues that often shape household stability in Dominica.
Moreover, the Association continued its activities on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, at the UWI Global campus with a panel discussion aimed at increasing awareness on matters related to copyright protection in Dominica’s local music industry, focusing on Bouyon and other indigenous sounds.
It’s all about how we protect our local music and the copyright in our local music. When you create music or a song, that is property. And most people do not understand that, with that property, you can earn and income and you can also leave it to the next generation, Didier explained as she spoke of the importance of this panel discussion.
The discussion brought together different musicians, artists, the media, stakeholders and the general public who learned about copyright law and its practice. Local celebrities including Michele Henderson, Shelly Alfred, and Gael “Trilla-G” Jno were on the panel, which also featured Registrar of Companies and Intellectual Property Artlyn Nesty.
