Dominica: The Government of Dominica has reaffirmed its commitment to the youth sports development in the country with a launch of a newly upgraded Trafalgar Basketball Facility last Friday.

On the 30th of January, the government of Dominica held an official opening ceremony for the commission of the new basketball facility in the community of Trafalgar. This facility is part of the BNTF10 project aimed at improving access to better infrastructure and services for the community.

The opening ceremony was attended by many key governmental officials including the Prime Minister of Dominica, Roosevelt Skerrit, Minister of Investment and Governance, Minister of Finance, Economic Development, Climate Resilience and Social Security and the Parliamentary Representative of the Roseau Valley Constituency. In addition, the Minister of Culture, Youth, Sports and Community Development, Greta Roberts, and members of the BNFT oversight committee and the Trafalgar Village council were also present.

During the ceremony, Prime Minister Skerrit shared of his hope for the community in making sufficient use of the upgraded basketball court.

“I have no doubt that people will make use of the facility and take full advantage of it and recognize that the investment was a good investment in the community, good investment inn young people and a good investment in the promotion of our wellness as a community and a country.”

He further added, “The record will show that this government has been a major champion for youth and sports development in Dominica.”

The project upgrade began in September 2024 and saw its final completion in September 2025. It has a total investment of over EC $1 million and includes key upgrades and features that have strengthened the court by providing a safer space for the youth to develop their skills and talent.

According to the BNFT project manager, previously, the court lacked aesthetics and had inadequate sports infrastructure that disqualified it from meeting the ‘current standards of basketball.’ In his speech, He addressed the lack of permanent washrooms, changing rooms, storage space and the limited sitting capacity that prevented the court to be used as a revenue generating facility.

The project manager revealed that while the basketball court was being restored, all of these problems were resolved. Moreover, the new upgrades also included improved lighting, increased seating capacity, upgraded C rims, scoreboard and a new fence and gates.
