Dominica launches youth skills training initiative | Dominica News

Participants explored the programme’s core modules, including environmental awareness, sector knowledge, and transferable skills.

Dominica: Three Government Ministries have collaborated with UNICEF to organise a comprehensive training course to different trainers, preparing them to deliver a Caribbean-wide curriculum focused on sustainable careers in Green, Blue and Circular Economies for the youth in Dominica.

On Thursday, April 23, 2026, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries Blue and Green Economy shared that it, along with the Ministry of Education and the Youth Development Division has collaborated with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), to host a Youth Skills Certificate Trainer engagement session in the country.

This engagement session brought together representatives from the three ministries and different NGOs to promote development and sustainability among the youth in Dominica, equipping young individuals from the age of 12 to 24 with “practical skills for sustainable livelihoods.”

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, the participants explored the structure and core modules of the programme which was mandatory for all as they delved into the basic foundation, such as “environmental awareness, sector knowledge, transferable skills, and safe participation.”

Following the completion of the core modules, participants were introduced and given the option of selecting one of three pathway options, including community action and civic action, employability and entrepreneurship as areas to focus on for deeper engagement.

The Agricultural Ministry also shared that the participants were trained on different approaches to educate the young learners in a way that will keep them engaged and involved.

The Ministry has shared this session highlights on Facebook, describing it as a successful initiative and that the trainers will implement all that they have learned in the coming months.

This initiative will see trained facilitators delivering engaging, in-person sessions over the coming months, helping to prepare youth across the Eastern Caribbean for opportunities in emerging green and blue sectors, wrote the Ministry of Agriculture.

The Ministry has thanked all trainers for attending the youth engagement session and playing a part in creating a sustainable future for the youth in Dominica.

“We thank all facilitators and participants for their enthusiasm and commitment to shaping a more sustainable future for our youth!”
