Dominica Makes Historic FIBA AmeriCup Qualifier Debut | Dominica News

Dominica's Senior Men's National Basketball Team is competing in its first-ever FIBA tournament at the AmeriCup 2029 Caribbean Pre-Qualifiers in Guyana.

Dominica: The Dominica Amateur Basketball Association (DABA) has announced that the Senior Men’s National Basketball Team is currently in Guyana representing Dominica at the FIBA AmeriCup 2029 Caribbean Pre-Qualifiers. This will be the senior team’s first ever FIBA tournament, marking a historic milestone for the players and country.

The FIBA tournament will run from July 8 to July 12, 2026, in Georgetown, Guyana, with a total of 10 Caribbean countries set to compete this year. Dominica will contest in Group A against Guyana, Antigua and Barbuda, Bermuda, and Turks and Caicos Islands while in Group B will consist of Cayman Islands, Barbados, Grenada, Haiti and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

The match schedule has been released with Dominica first set to face Turks and Caicos Islands on day 2, Guyana on day 3, Antigua and Barbuda on day 4 and Bermuda on day 5. Kijuan Thomas of the Dr. Darroux PSC Falcons was earlier announced as the captain for basketball team.

DABA has extended its gratitude to the Dominica Olympic Committee for their support in making the team’s participation possible.

President of the Caribbean Basketball Confederation, Leslie Collymore, shared a message to the players during the official opening ceremony of the competition, wishing the players luck ahead of their games

Today marks the beginning of a defining moment. On behalf of the Caribbean Basketball Confederation, I extend my best wishes to every player, coach, official, volunteer, and federation taking part. This championship is more than a competition, it is a celebration of Caribbean talent, unity, resilience, and the relentless pursuit of excellence,” shared President Collymore.

Encouraging the players, he stated, “Play with passion, compete with integrity and represent your nation with pride.”

The President has also extended his gratitude to the fans for their unwavering support as the Confederation continues to “elevate Caribbean basketball on the international stage.”

Day one of the competition has already taken place, with Barbados, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Antigua & Barbuda, and Turks & Caicos Islands showcasing impressive performances and winning their opening matches.
