Dominica has ordered 12 new garbage trucks, expected before Christmas, to improve waste collection and address residents’ concerns.
The Government of Dominica recently ordered 12 new additional garbage trucks for better and much more efficient waste collection in the country. The Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit announced the decision during a Dominica Labour Party National Council meeting held in Wesley on Saturday after receiving multiple complaints from residents about irregular garbage collection.
The Prime Minister spoke “When garbage collection is irregular, the problem is felt at your own gate. People have raised those concerns and we are acting on them”. He further explained that with the arrival of new garbage collection trucks, it will strengthen and ensure more regularity in the garbage collection process particularly for the areas and communities where the system isn’t able to operate regularly.
Expressing his concerns on irregularity in the garbage collection system, the prime minister further stressed the need for clear collection schedules so that everyone actively participates and co-operates with workers and governments and reports whenever a scheduled garbage collection gets missed.
Further addressing the situation, Prime Minister Skerrit also mentioned about the responsibility of people as citizens and households of the country by helping to improve the service in and for the country by putting out garbage properly, following collection schedules, reporting to the governments officials whenever missed and also using correct arrangements for disposing bulky wastes.
“The purpose of this investment is the service at your gate. That is where families should feel the improvement, and where we must keep checking that response is reaching them.” Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit further stated. Sensing the sensitivity of the situation he personally addressed the public to make them understand the importance of waste collection and its operations for the country’s people and its environment.
