Dominica Orders 500 New Streetlights for Roads | Dominica News

Dominica has ordered 500 new streetlights to improve road lighting, while Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit says measures will be taken to prevent theft.

Dominica: Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit at a Dominica Labour Party National Council meeting in Wesley announced that the government has responded to the complaints of local public and ordered 500 streetlights which would be installed on streets all over Dominica.

This decision came in as a response from the government on complaints from the public on the absence of street lights and difficulties faced during night- time by the citizens. “People have spoken to us about roads that are too dark, and we are responding. We have ordered 500 lights for this programme,” said the Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit.

He further stated that the government is also taking measures to ensure complete safety at night , protecting lights from theft and vandalism which includes stronger and better equipment, protective fittings, security cameras and laws to ensure complete security of the local asset.

Further he stated proper maintenance and quick repairs are also equally important to ensure smooth working of the lights. “We have seen what vandalism does to public lighting. A light serves to everyone who uses that road. Taking it or damaging it puts the whole community at a disadvantage” quoted Prime Minister Skerrit further urging the public to take care of the country’s infrastructure by stating “Your own child may have to use that road. Your neighbour may be walking there. Leave the equipment to serve the people it was installed for.”

The government is enforcing stricter laws to ensure that no one breaks the rules and regulations of the country, disrupting peace and harmony of the nation and also creating unrest amongst the public masses. To ensure that no such scenario repeats again, the government and its committee is taking each and every precaution and charging a fine, fee or a punishment as a legal offence in case a person breaks the rules and regulations and doesn’t abide by the laws.
