Dominica completes its first brain tumour surgery locally, marking a major healthcare milestone and expanding access to advanced neurosurgical services.
Dominica: The Ministry of Health, Wellness and Social Services has announced a historic milestone in the country’s medical system as it completed its first ever brain tumour surgery, signalling a new era of healthcare in the country.
This announcement was made by the country’s Minister of Health, Wellness and Social Services, Cassani Laville, during an official press conference where he was providing updates on the country’s healthcare services.
In his address, the Minister of Health highlighted this achievement which he described as a major step forward, underscoring its importance in enhancing public healthcare services.
The procedure was successfully conducted two weeks ago after a patient was diagnosed with an “aggressive brain tumour.” Minister Laville informed the citizens, Government officials and members of the media that the surgery was performed by Dominica’s medical team and utilised the country’s local resources.
The Minister also highlighted the country’s previous achievement of conducting its first spine surgery which was seen as a success as well. He noted that the healthcare systems are continuously being strengthened, which will greatly benefit the citizens of Dominica.
This achievement follows the first successful spinal surgery performed earlier this year and demonstrates the tremendous progress being made in strengthening the capacity and capability of our healthcare system throughout the expansion of neurosurgical services, stated Health Minister Laville.
Laville further explained the importance of this historic procedure in ensuring patients will get treatment in their home country instead of having to travel. He shared that the Government’s investments in its citizens and infrastructure have helped achieve this.
He shared, “It speaks to the investments we have made in our people, our infrastructure, and our partnerships, allowing more Dominican patients to receive complex care at home, surrounded by their families and their very own support systems.”
