Dominica plans port development through… | Dominica News

Dominica is exploring private investment in port facilities, improved air links and airport development as it prepares for its 50th independence anniversary.

Dominica: Prime Minister Dr. Roosevelt Skerrit outlined several development priorities for Dominica, including attracting private investors to upgrade port facilities, improving international air connectivity, and completing construction of the new international airport by 2028.

PM Skerrit delivered his National Day address at the Windsor Park Sports Stadium on November 3, 2026. He said that the government was exploring possibilities of forming partnership ventures between the government and private investors for the cruise facilities, cargo port, and ferry terminal.

The proposed arrangements would allow investors to contribute money and expertise, while the government provides the land and other resources.

The Prime Minister said that this initiative could help finance major infrastructure development, while minimizing the nation's dependency on its Citizenship by Investment (CBI) funds and borrowings. He also asked the responsible ministries to consult stakeholders before proceeding with their proposals by November 18, 2026.

PM Skerrit also announced that the United States International Development Finance Corporation is expected to visit Dominica in the coming weeks to explore investment opportunities, including major infrastructure projects.

Speaking on air access, the Prime Minister said that American Airlines was preparing to operate a larger aircraft on its Dominica route. The government is also pursuing an Open Skies Agreement with the United States, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.

The airport, which is scheduled to be completed by the first quarter of 2028, currently employs more than 400 Dominicans in its construction. PM Skerrit encouraged local entrepreneurs and tour operators interested in doing business at the facility to submit expressions of interest to the Ministry of Tourism.

PM Skerrit also mentioned that the country’s tourism sector recorded the highest number of overnight visitors in 2025, while the latest cruise season was the strongest in 15 years. Construction of housing and roads was equally emphasized, with the Prime Minister noting that 3,000 hurricane-resistant houses have been constructed across the island.

The National Day festivities concluded with President Sylvanie Burton awarding 17 people for their contributions towards the development of Dominica. The island nation is focusing on development in several areas, while preparing to celebrate its 50th independence anniversary in 2028.
