Dominica: Four Sports Groups have received cheques from the Government as part of its efforts to assist the organisations and improve sports in the country.
The Government of Dominica has reaffirmed its commitment to youth sports development as it provided financial support to different sports organisations in the country.
The Ministry of Culture, Youth Sports and Community Development arranged the handing over ceremony, which took place this Friday, March 6, at the Ministry of Finance conference room.
Cheques were handed to different organisations, including the Dominica Athletics Association ($30,000), Dominica Cricket Association ($40,000), Dominica Netball Association ($20,000) and Dominica Amateur Basketball Association ($20,000). The Ministry announced that for other associations, such as the Volleyball, Boxing and Cycling Associations, the funding will be disbursed at a later time.
At the ceremony, Oscar George, the Minister of Youth and Sports, shared that the financial support is a response to the suggestions and recommendations raised by the organisations during a consultation with the Ministry in 2025.

Last year, the Government invited representatives of sports, youth and culture-based organisations to a consultation hosted at the state house. One of the recommendations made by sporting organisations was for the Government to seek to introduce annual subventions to defer some of the costs of running the associations, stated Minister Oscar George.
He added that recommendations were accepted well and that the sports and culture groups existing for more than 5 years have been included in the budget and will receive support yearly. Moreover, funds were and will be given according to the size of the associations.
"This recommendation was well received by the government. So, in the last year, the fiscal budget presentation made by the Honourable Minister of Finance, the announcement was made to provide annual subventions to sporting and cultural groups and organizations which have been in existence for more than 5 years," he added.
