Eleven schools in Dominica’s east and northeast districts closed on April 27 due to flooding and access issues caused by heavy rainfall.
Dominica: The Ministry of Education has announced that due to the weather conditions in the country, eleven schools in the east and north east districts will be closed on April 27, 2026. This decision is to ensure safety for all leaners and staff members amid the ongoing disruptions caused by the heavy rainfall in Dominica.
Following the flood warning issued by Dominica’s Meteorological Services, members of Cabinet convened for an emergency meeting in response to the weather systems. This emergency meeting was called by Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit on the evening of April 26,2026.
During the Cabinet meeting, the Ministry and the Office of Disaster Management reported that, after conducting assessments, they have observed “significant disruption” in the Eastern and Northeaster communities which has rendered access to several schools compromised, with some routes impassable.
With this report, members of Cabinet took the decision to close eleven schools in the affected districts to ensure safety for the learners.
The Ministry of Education then shared a press release informing the general public that Concord Primary, Atkinson Primary, Salybia Primary, Sineku Primary, Castle Bruce Primary, San Sauveur Primary, Temple Seventh Day Adventist, Wesley Primary, Wills Strathmore Stevens (WS Stevens) Primary, Castle Bruce Secondary and North East Comprehensive will be closed on Monday, April 27, 2026.

The Government of Dominica and the Prime Minister have posted this announcement on their official Facebook page with a message urging the citizens to continue taking caution during this period.
Residents of these areas are urged to continue exercising caution, remain vigilant and follow all official updates. Further updates will be provided as the situation evolves, wrote the Government of Dominica.
Citizens have taken to the comment section, expressing that this was a good call to ensure safety for the students.
