Dominica strengthens fight against giant African Snail | Dominica News

Dominica is expanding efforts to control Giant African Snail infestations through farmer training, bucket traps, research and community outreach.

Dominica: The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Blue and Green Economy has announced that it is working directly with local farmers in Dominica as it continues to strengthen the fight against one of the world’s most invasive agricultural pests, the Giant African Snail (GAS), reaffirming its commitment to protecting crops, safeguarding livelihoods as well as to ensure food security across the island.

This announcement was made on Thursday, June 25, as the Ministry of Agriculture shared that its technical team is working closely with farmers to roll out several methods that are cost effective, environment friendly and practical for reducing the Giant African Snail populations in the country’s farms.

According to the Ministry, the bucket trap method has proven to be the most effective approach so far, noting that it is a simple and affordable tool for monitoring and it can be easily adopted by the farmers.

Moreover, to further strengthen its fight, apart from engaging with the farmers, the Ministry has also been providing field demonstrations, conducting continuous research, and having direct engagement with the different communities, especially those at high-risk, to educate the locals. Earlier last week, the Ministry announced that it is organising a community outreach for residents in Grand Bay and the surrounding areas, with the outreach scheduled to take place this Tuesday, June 23, at the Grand Bay Youth Centre.

It has emphasised that this fight is a collective one, encouraging both farmers and residents to be on high alert and to report any sighting.

“The fight against the Giant African Snail requires a collective effort. We encourage farmers and the public to remain vigilant, report sightings, and continue implementing recommended management practices. Together, we can protect our farms, strengthen food security, and build a more resilient agricultural sector for Dominica,” emphasised the Agricultural Ministry.

Reaffirming its commitment to the citizens, the Ministry further added, “Through field demonstrations, farmer engagement, and ongoing research, the Ministry remains committed to protecting crops, safeguarding livelihoods, and supporting sustainable agricultural production throughout Dominica.”
