Dominica to build explosive storehouse to fight crime | Dominica News DM

Dominica partners with CARICOM IMPACS to build a new explosive storehouse and modernize firearms registration as part of a strategic regional initiative.

Dominica:  An explosive storehouse will be built in Dominica to help strengthen the country’s capacity as it attempts to reduce the number of illegal firearms.  

Earlier this week, at the Inter-Institutional Roundtable Meeting that is currently taking place in Dominica, Calixus Joseph, the Assistant Director of the CARICOM Implementation Agency for Crime and Security (CARICOM IMPACS), announced that the organization has plans to construct a new storehouse for the explosive materials in Dominica.  

The Assistant Director shared that CARICOM IMPACS will collaborate with the Mines Advisory Group (MAG) to ensure that this project comes to life. According to Calixux Joseph, the team is currently cooperating with the Government of Dominica and the police force to identify where the storehouse will be built.  

We are also working closely with the government of Dominica and the police service to identify suitable land for the construction of a new explosive storehouse, where IMPACTS and MAG will be providing Dominica with a new construction of a storehouse, he announced.

This initiative is part of IMPACTS’s broader effort to support the country as it deals with addressing issues related to illicit firearms.  In addition to the storehouse, the Assistant Director also mentioned a few other initiatives that will aid in strengthening  

In his address, Director Joseph spoke of providing brass track support and other equipment, including instruments for firearms marking, to the police. Moreover, CARICOM IMPACTS also plans to digitalize the firearms licensing and registration systems in the country.  

According to Joseph, “This is not just about digitising systems in Dominica, it is also about helping Dominica to build a more modern, efficient and accountable firearms licencing and registration regime. One that is better aligned with national legislation, international best practice, but better able to support traceability and better equipped to support oversight and administration.”
