Dominica will hand over 215 homes and apartment units to families across nine communities, with 11 families already receiving new homes in Canefield East.
Dominica: The Government of Dominica has announced that over the next two months, 215 families across nine different communities in the country will receive modern and climate resilient homes and apartment units. This housing initiative is part of the Government's greater efforts to support the citizens who lost their homes in natural calamities and strengthen communities.
This announcement was made by Prime Minister Dr. Roosevelt Skerrit during a housing handover ceremony at Canefield East on September 4, 2026, where 11 families received keys to their new homes as the first recipients of the housing initiative.
"Ladies and gentlemen, over the next few weeks, the Government will hand over 215 homes and apartment units in nine communities across Dominica. That means 215 families will have the opportunity to move into safe, modern and resilient homes," announced Prime Minister Skerrit.
During the ceremony, the Prime Minister shared that the Government is investing in housing as it recognised that not everyone is financially able to afford or secure a home of their own.
"If the Government does not help the people who need help, then who will? Who can these families turn to?" asked the Prime Minister.
He further declared, "We are moving community by community, family by family, and house by house, because we believe that every Dominican deserves a safe and comfortable place to live."
Also present at the handing over ceremony, Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Melissa Poponne-Skerrit, also expressed the importance of the hosing initiative being undertaken by the Government. She noted that the programme not only addresses housing needs in the country but also helps families rebuild their lives with greater security and dignity.
“A home is far more than just four walls. It’s your sanctuary! This is about giving every Dominican, regardless of their circumstances, the opportunity to live well, with pride and security,” stated the Housing Minister.
Beneficiaries have expressed their gratitude to the Government for their new homes. One beneficiary at Canefield East, Verlyn Moses, having lost her home three times in the span of nine years, stated, "It was painful and starting over each time felt impossible. But today, because of this caring government, we have a new home, a safe home, a home that has been given to us at no cost."
