Prime Minister Skerrit announces full investigation into Roseau fire, with government support for affected families and businesses after major destruction.

Dominica: Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has addressed the latest fire incident, announcing that the Government of Dominica will launch a comprehensive investigation into the causes of the major fire. He shared that support will be provided to the affected families and businesses.

On Wednesday, May 6, 2026, Prime Minister Dr. Roosevelt Skerrit held a press conference with members of the media where he spoke about a few key issues of national concern and participated in a question and answer session. The conference took place at the Ministry of Finance Conference Room and was broadcast live for the citizens of Dominica who got to listen and get clarity on what is happening in the country and how the Government is handling different matters to better serve them.

Prime Minister Skerrit began his speech by first addressing the recent fire incident that happened in Roseau City earlier on Wednesday night. He stated that the fire caused “severe and extensive destruction” in the city, reporting that 10 buildings have been compromised, 8 of which have been severely damaged.

Noting that families and businesses have suffered loss, Dr. Skerrit communicated that the Government will provide support to the citizens during these difficult times, stating that social support agencies are currently being mobilised to assist those affected.

To the families and businesses affected, the Government of Dominica stands firmly with you. We understand the trauma and uncertainty that come with such devastating loss. The relevant social support agencies are being mobilized to provide immediate assistance, and we will ensure that those impacted receive the support they need during this difficult time, stated Dr. Skerrit.

He added that the Government will not ignore this incident as it is the second fire to occur in such a short span of time. Describing the circumstance as “a deeply troubling pattern,” Skerrit announced that the Government will launch a full investigation, apart from those that are already ongoing.

“This is not something any responsible government can ignore or dismiss. It is a matter that demands urgent and serious attention and investigation,” Skerrit further added, “so while investigations are already underway, the Government of Dominica will mandate a full and comprehensive investigation into these incidents, including the causes, circumstances, and any factor that may have contributed to them. We owe that to the affected families, the business community, and every citizen who calls Roseau home."

The National Leader commended the fire and emergency services for swiftly responding to the fire and doing all it takes to protect the citizens of Dominica.

Our fire and emergency services responded swiftly and professionally, and I commend every officer and volunteer who placed themselves in harm's way to contain the blaze and protect lives and property, shared the Minister.
