Dominica authorities urge residents to stay prepared as the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season begins, despite forecasts for below-normal activity.
Dominica: The Dominica Meteorological Services has announced that the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season has officially begun, with the season beginning on June 1 and carrying on until November 30, 2026. According to the Meteorological Services, the 2026 season is predicted to be below normal, with an average of 14 storms-7 hurricanes and 3 major hurricanes (Cat 3 and above).
According to the prediction provided by Dominica Met, the 2026 outlook includes a 55% probability of a below-normal hurricane season, a 35% chance of a near-normal season, and a 10% chance of an above-normal season.
Forecasts predict between 8 to 14 named storms, of which 3 to 6 are expected to develop into hurricanes. Additionally, the Services has also shared the 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season Outlook is expected to have 1 to 3 major hurricanes.
Acting Director of the Met Services, Marshal Alexander, has urged the citizens to remain vigilant and well informed as conditions are likely to change at any given time.
“Despite this forecast, Dominica must not become complacent. Our history has shown us that it only takes one storm to make for a very dangerous and devastating season. We are encouraging the public and all sectors to stay updated through official weather information sources,” stated Director Marshal Alexander.
Moreover, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has also shared an important message to Dominicans as the Atlantic Hurricane Season begins, urging them to be well prepared. He explained that the Government has invested in building and providing climate resilient homes to the citizens, as well as enhancing its emergency response systems, however, citizens also have a responsibility to contribute to resilience efforts.
