DOMLEC announces planned power cuts for Geothermal testing | Dominica News

DOMLEC will conduct geothermal plant tests on May 13-14, 2026, with possible power interruptions between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. during grid integration.

Dominica: The Dominica Electricity Services Ltd. (DOMLEC) has announced that it will be conducting specific tests for two days as part of the commissioning process of the geothermal plant. These tests will be carried out on Wednesday, May 13 and Thursday, May 14, 2026, resulting in possible electricity interruptions between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m.

This announcement was shared on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, as DOMLEC released a Geothermal Testing Notice to alert the general public of the scheduled temporary system interruptions.

These interruptions have been ongoing in different parts of the island for some time now, with the Government aiming to transform Dominica’s energy grid from relying on imported fuel to generating its own power, which is said to reduce the consumers' bills by 17 per cent.

The geothermal plant is currently in its final stage, the testing phase, and according to DOMLEC this phase is necessary to integrate the plant into the national grid. The electricity service provider has further reiterated the importance of renewable energy for the country, stating that it is “aimed at reducing Dominica’s dependence on imported diesel fuel and supporting the country’s transition to a renewable energy-dominant system.”

This information was shared on DOMLEC’s official Facebook page where the service has asked the consumers to exercise patience during this critical period. Citizens are urged to look out for timely alerts from the service to prepare themselves beforehand.

DOMLEC wrote, “We appreciate the patience and understanding of our customers as we enter the final stages of this important national project. DOMLEC will provide timely updates should there be any changes to this schedule”

A few citizens have taken to the comment section to express their opinions, with some concerned about why the power cut has to be for two consecutive days within the week, sharing that it will affect the students' lives as they begin revision this week.

However, others have taken the shared notice positively, glad to see the ongoing progress and looking forward to when the country can finally transition.
