DOMLEC apologises for prolonged power outages across Dominica on August 14–15, citing multiple incidents and promising stronger customer communication.
Dominica: The Dominica Electricity Services Limited (DOMLEC) has extended its apology to customers who experienced power outages on Friday, August 14 and Saturday, August 15, 2026. The company says the outages were caused by a series of incidents that disrupted electricity supply in several communities, resulting in significant inconvenience to customers.
According to DOMLEC, four major outages had taken place during the 24 hours. The first outage happened at 04:29AM on Friday morning, with the power being restored at 07:30 a.m., while the second outage was at 1:09PM.
Moreover, the following two power interruptions occurred at 10:30 p.m. when a tree fell on high-tension lines in Fond Canie, and at 4:00 a.m. on Saturday morning, which interrupted service to the East Coast and Laudat.
The Electricity Services shared that restoration of the power cuts took place throughout Saturday, with electricity supply returned to most affected areas by 2:00 p.m.
DOMLEC’s Acting General Manager, Ellise Darwton, acknowledged the disruptions and the impact that prolonged outages have on different businesses and households alike. She shared that the company will continue strengthening its communication efforts, to ensure customers receive timely and accessible updates.
We understand how difficult it is to be without electricity for several hours, particularly overnight and into the following day. Customers depend on electricity for their homes, businesses, food storage, communication and many other essential activities. We sincerely apologise for the disruption and frustration experienced, shared Ellise Darwton.
The Acting General Manager further added, “We recognise that customers need timely information, particularly during a prolonged outage. While updates were provided through national radio and social media, we are reviewing how we communicate during major incidents and identifying additional, more grassroots ways of reaching customers who may not have access to electronic devices or internet service when their electricity is off.”
Meanwhile, DOMLEC’s Engineering, Transmission & Distribution Manager, Daryl Dalrymple, has explained that the electricity sector is undergoing significant transformation with the integration of the geothermal power plant. He added that the project is currently in Phase One and DOMLEC remains focused on addressing any technical challenges that occurs.
We know that customers expect reliable electricity, and that expectation is completely understandable. It is critical, however, that we get it right, that we resolve all the issues and the problems that we are experiencing now to have a better, more reliable system.
The Electricity Services has shared the apology on its official Facebook page where it has also thanked the citizens for their patience and understanding, expressing that the Services remains committed to building a stronger, more reliable electricity network for the long-term benefit of Dominica and its people.
