Geothermal energy supplied 68% of Dominica's electricity in June, helping reduce DOMLEC's July fuel surcharge from 43.64¢ to 33.61¢ per kWh.
Dominica: The Dominica Electricity Services Limited (DOMLEC) has shared a fuel surcharge update for the month of July 2026, announcing that a reduction was observed in in the electricity fuel surcharge rate. The new rate is now 33.61 cents per kWh; a 10-cent decrease from the 43.64 cents per kWh reflected in June 2026.
According to the utility company, a total of 8,778,177 kilowatt-hours of electricity were sold last month. A total of 193,752 gallons of fuel was consumed at an average price of $13.6197 per gallon. Moreover, a geothermal charge of $583,700.23 was also taken into account.
Public Relations Officer of DOMLEC, Ayeola George, was seen providing a further breakdown of these numbers during a discussion session with members of the media on Thursday, July 16, 2026, where she described the reduction as a major milestone for the country.
Speaking with the media, Ayeola George reported that geothermal energy is now supplying 68 per cent of electricity generation in Dominica—a major progress that contributed to the decline in the monthly fuel surcharge.
In March of 2026, geothermal energy contributed just 6% of renewable energy generation. By April, this figure rose to 26% and combined with hydro, our total renewable energy penetration was 51%. This figure increased to 58% in May and by June increased even further to 68%, reported Ayeola George.
DOMLEC’s PRO further added, “With each monthly increase in our use of renewable energy, we saw major decreases in our use of diesel fuel to generate power. So, we went from 373,000 gallons in January to about 194,000 gallons in June.”
The PRO noted that if geothermal power was not present, the fuel surcharge would have been 63 cents instead of the 33 cents, underscoring the significance of this project for the country.
“While we have no control over the cost of diesel, its impact on overall cost is much less as renewables have become the dominant source of generation in Dominica. This is the true and tangible impact of geothermal,” asserted the PRO.
George has thanked the public for their patience as they continue integrating the geothermal plant into Dominica’s grid.
