The ECCB unveiled redesigned EC banknotes featuring regional icons, with Dame Mary Eugenia Charles appearing on the new EC$20 note.
Dominica: The Eastern Caribbean Central Bank (ECCB) has unveiled the new Eastern Caribbean banknotes, with the new notes redesigned to honour the achievements, heritage and the legacy of individuals who have greatly impacted the Eastern Caribbean region.
Dominica’s Dame Mary Eugenia Charles, who served as Prime Minister from 1980 to 1995, was featured on the redesigned EC$20 banknote, honouring her political legacy and contributions to regional development.
The redesigned notes were unveiled on Thursday, July 9, 2026, during the Monetary Council Chairmanship Hand-over Ceremony in Roseau, Dominica, where Dr. Irving McIntyre, Minister of Finance, Economic Development, Climate Resilience and Social Security, succeeded Gaston Browne, Prime Minister and Minister of Finance of Antigua and Barbuda as the new Chairman of the ECCB Monetary Council.
The banknotes were officially revealed by the Governor of the Eastern Caribbean Central Bank, Timothy N.J. Antoine, and members of the Monetary Council, who showcased that the EC currency has replaced the late Queen Elizabeth II’s portrait with national heroes, influential nation builders in the region as well as the heritage and achievements of the eight member states of the Eastern Caribbean Currency Union (ECCU).
Governor Timothy N.J. Antoine stated that the new designs were influenced by the people following an invitation from the Monetary Council to offer recommendations on what imagery should be included.
The response was clear and compelling. The people called for our currency to honour our own heroes, nation builders, and persons whose lives and achievements have enriched our countries and strengthened our region, stated the Governor.
He noted that each member country nominated an individual whose life and legacy reflected the “highest ideals of service, leadership, scholarship, and excellence.”
