Earnisha Fontaine becomes first Dominican woman in WCPL | Dominica News

Earnisha Fontaine joins Trinbago Knight Riders for WCPL 2026, becoming the first Dominican woman drafted into the regional tournament.

Dominica: Captain of Dominica’s National Women’s Cricket Team, Earnisha Fontaine, has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first female cricketer from Dominica to be drafted into the Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL). Captain Fontaine has been signed by the Trinbago Knight Riders for the upcoming 2026 season which will commence this September in Barbados.

Fontaine’s selection is a significant breakthrough for women’s cricket in Dominica as it strengthens the island's growing presence in regional cricket. Moreover, it also highlights the growing talent in the country and inspires the next generation of female cricketers.

The Women’s Caribbean Premier League will feature four teams in this year’s tournament, including the Trinbago Knight Riders, Barbados Tridents, Guyana Amazon Warriors, and the newly formed Jamaica Empress.

The 22-year-old wicket-keeper batter and her team will face some of the region’s top players such as Hayley Matthews, Qiana Joseph and Afy Fletcher who will play for the Barbados Tridents; Shermaine Campbell, playing for Guyana Amazon Warriors; and Chinelle Henry, Stafanie Taylor and Zaida James for the Jamaica Empress.

Moreover, according to the information provided, different overseas players will also be joining each team, with their names set to be announced in the coming weeks.

During her interview with the media, Fontaine expressed happiness for being picked, stating that it was her goal and something she has been anticipating since 2025.

When I got the call, I had no words honestly, but I was really happy, stated Fontaine.

When asked how she felt about playing with some of the top women cricketers in the region such as West Indies player Karishma Ramharack and Deandra Dottin, Fontaine responded that looks forward to playing alongside them and experiencing them on the field.

She added that this is a stepping stone toward her bigger goal of representing the West Indies Women’s team and thanked her family, coach, teammates, and fans for all their support.
