Geothermal Plant cuts Dominica diesel use by 26% | Dominica News

Geothermal energy supplied 26% of Dominica’s electricity in April 2026, reducing diesel dependence and helping lower fuel surcharge costs.

Dominica: The Dominica Electricity Services Limited (DOMLEC) has shared highlights of some of the tangible benefits the country has realized because of integrating the geothermal power plant in Dominica’s power grid. A major benefit of this national investment project was that it reduced Dominica’s dependency on diesel generation by 26 percent.

DOMLEC informed the citizens that more than half (51 percent) of the electricity supplied in April 2026 came from renewable sources. 26 percent of the generated electricity was derived from geothermal energy while 25 percent was from hydro resources, reducing diesel dependency from an average of 75 percent to 49 percent.

“These gains are particularly important at a time when global fuel prices continue to rise sharply,” shared DOMLEC.

The Electricity Services went on to disclose that the by May, the fuel surcharge had also reduced from $0.4953/kWh to $0.4627/kWh.  Earlier in the beginning of the year, the surcharge was $0.3198/kWh and was seen increasing as the months went by due to the conflict in the Middle East which caused fuel to climb from $9 to almost $15 per gallon in Dominica.

“Without geothermal energy, customers would have faced a significantly higher surcharge of $0.6506/kWh,” explained the Services who further added that the figures demonstrate the “long-term value” that the geothermal power plant will have in the country.

According to the Services, more reliance on geothermal energy will result in “greater price stability, reduced exposure to volatile fuel markets, and a more reliable electricity system” for the consumers.

DOMLEC further reiterated the importance of the national investment and reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that the challenges remain minimal during the transition phase. It thanked the consumers for their patience during this period, stating that the organization doing its best to address power outages challenges.

“At Dominica Electricity Services Limited (DOMLEC), we recognise the frustration customers have experienced due to the unplanned outages that have occurred during the commissioning and testing phase of the geothermal plant in Laudat. We sincerely thank the public for its patience as Dominica undertakes one of the most significant energy transitions in its history,” shared DOMLEC.
