Plant reached 90% of it designed output; brief outages may occur as final testing continues, with DOMLEC noting progress toward reducing diesel reliance.
Dominica: The Dominica Electricity Service Limited (DOMLEC) has shared an announcement, informing the citizens of Dominica that the Geothermal Power Plant commissioning is in the final stages, bringing Dominica’s goal of being the first climate resilient country one step forward to being achieved.
In the announcement, DOMLEC reported that on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, the Geothermal Plant had reached ninety per cent of it designed output. According to the Service, this percentage means that more than sixty percent of the island’s consumers are currently being supplied with and using renewable energy.
Being in the final stages, the Electricity Services has shared that some areas might still experience brief power outages while the engineers continue performing final tests on the Plant.
“As we progress through this important phase to reduce our dependence on imported diesel fuel unexpected outages can still occur,” shared DOMLEC
The Dominica Electricity Services has expressed gratitude to the general public for their patience during this time of transitioning.
“We appreciate your patience and understanding,” wrote the Electricity Services.
The Electricity Services shared this announcement on its official Facebook page a few where citizens have taken to the comment section to ask some questions for clarity.
Seeking to know about how the future will look when the Geothermal Plant is fully intergraded in the grid, a Facebook user under Kylian McNeal posed a question, “So does this mean that we will begin to see reductions in our bill?”
Other users have praised the progress so far, stating that they are looking forward to seeing its full completion. Naomi Sampson commented, “Awesome, I just want to hear no more blackouts or load shedding.”
Having the Power Plant fully operational will reduce Dominica’s dependency on foreign oil tankers, significantly reducing reliance on imported diesel.
