DOMLEC says geothermal energy has reduced fuel surcharges, cutting July 2026 electricity bills by 17–18% across domestic, commercial and industrial users.
Dominica: The Dominica Electricity Services Limited (DOMLEC) has announced that customers will see a reduction in their July 2026 electricity bills. This decrease is a result of a lower fuel surcharge driven by the integration of geothermal energy into Dominica’s power grid.
DOMLEC shared that approximately EC$24 will be saved for domestic customers using 100 kWh while those utilising 250 kWh will save approximately EC$61. Moreover, for commercial customers, about EC$122 dollars will be saved for 500kWh and about $589 for those consuming 2,416 kWh.
For a hotel consuming 8,609 kWh, it will save approximately EC$2,098 while an industrial customer using 14,402 kWh will save around EC$3,509.
According to the electricity services provider, these cost reductions represent savings of between 17 and 18 percent from what customers would have paid without geothermal energy.
Speaking in an interview with the media, DOMLEC’s General Manager, Dwayne Cenac, credited this change to the increase of the use of renewable energy in the country. He noted that reducing dependence on diesel has helped stabilise electricity prices.
If you look at our rates, there was a spike in March and April as a result of high fuel prices and because at that time, our renewal energy generation was still moderate and below 30 per cent. Since then, we have probably reduced our fuel consumption close to 50 per cent and that reduction is essentially where price stability comes in, stated the General Manager.
DOMLEC has shared this information on Facebook, informing its customers of the bill reduction. It noted that the rate is the same for all payment systems, including PAUG and Post Paid and customers should expect to see savings as well.
