Government moves to restore access after Dominica floods | Dominica News

PM Skerrit said restoring access routes is the top priority as landslides and flooding cut off communities in East and Northeast Dominica.

Dominica:  Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has assured support to the families and businesses in the East and Northeast of the island, announcing that the Government has made restoring community access its top priority and that recovery efforts are already being implemented.

Prime Minister Skerrit stated this after he toured the impacted areas in Antrizzle, Atkinson, the Kalinago Territory and Castle Bruce and assessed the widespread damages caused by the heavy rainfall which occurred on Sunday, April 26, following a severe trough system.

The Minister toured the areas on Monday, April 27, 2026, where he met with some of the residents who have been affected and listened to their concerns, of which many expressed that they have lost their homes and small businesses.

During his assessment, Prime Minister Skerrit confirmed that several landslides and flooding had caused severe damages, rendering some areas impassable. He stated that the Government’s primary goal is to restore access routes that had been completely cut off so that further help can be provided.

So the first objective of the government is to allow for vehicular access to reconnect every community and so we have mobilized all of the equipment that are available, said PM Skerrit.

The Ministry of Public Works, a team from the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Housing and Social Services have also conducted impact assessments in the communities, with some already implementing relief measures.

The Ministry of Public Works is currently continuing its road clearing and cleanup efforts in areas including Castle Bruce, Marigot and parts of the Kalinago Territory. The Ministry was also able to successfully reconnect the electricity and restore water in the areas.

In addition to these, the Government also provided shelter, food, care packages and psychological support to the residents of Atkinson, as it works on a long-term housing solution to those who have lost their homes or suffered severe damages.

The Government has shared that once the road clean up and clearing efforts have been completed and access has been restored; support will be provided for the farmers whose farms have been disrupted. Currently, the agriculture team is assessing the damages.

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit shared highlights of his visits to the communities on Facebook where he wrote, “I listened carefully as they shared their experiences: damage to their homes and the disruption to their daily lives. These conversations will help guide our response and ensure that the support we provide is based on the real needs of the people.”
