Indian Minister visits Dominica, promotes sustainability | Dominica News

India’s Minister Pabitra Margherita visits Dominica, engages with Kalinago community, and strengthens bilateral ties and sustainability initiatives.

Dominica: Dominica’s Ministry of Environment has shared that India’s Union Minister of State for External Affairs, Pabitra Margherita, has travelled to Dominica for a high-level mission meant to strengthen the partnership between the Government of Dominica and the Government of India. Upon arriving in the country, Minister Pabitra Margherita was warmly received and taken around the Kalinago Territory where he engaged with the community members and reaffirmed his Government’s commitment to supporting the Kalinago community.   

Minister Pabitra Margherita arrived in Dominica on Friday, May 15, 2026, following a previous visit to Belize and Honduras. Margherita first met with President Sylvanie Burton, where the two leaders engaged in constructive conversations to help deepen the bilateral relations between both nations.  

Following his engagement with President Burton, the Minister of State and his delegation visited the Kalinago Council and the Kalinago people and participated in a tree planting ceremony which he described as a “a step towards protecting nature and promoting sustainability.”  

According to the Ministry of Environment, the Indian Minister got the opportunity to see the ongoing progress of the Strengthening Community Resilience in the Kalinago Territory (SCR-K) Project. Moreover, Pabitra Margherita and his delegation visited the Forestry Propagation Centre at Pond Case and the Kalinago Barana Aute where they engaged with the community as they experienced the Kalinago culture, traditional performances, and a cassava-making demonstration.  

Underscoring the importance of this visit, the Ministry of Environment shared that engagements like these will deepen the cooperation between both Governments.

“This important engagement reflects the value of South-South cooperation and community-driven development in building resilience and preserving the rich cultural and environmental heritage of the Kalinago people,” shared the Ministry of Environment.    

The Ministry posted this interaction with the Indian Minister on Facebook, where it has extended its appreciation to the Government of India, UNDP, the Kalinago Council, Forestry Division, and all partners and community members, for the support they have shown in pushing sustainable development initiative forward in the Kalinago Territory.
