At meetings, Ministry met farmers noting challenges they are facing due to weather system on Apr 26, 2026; drainage, flooding, landslides.
Dominica: The Ministry of Environment Rural Modernisation, Kalinago Upliftment and Constituency has met with the farmers, including aquaculture farmers, in the Atkinson and Salybia communities, following a thorough assessment of the damages in the communities. This is part of the Ministry’s ongoing response and recovery efforts after the recent trough system in the East and Northeast regions.
The Ministry of Environment held the two important meetings with the farmers on Friday, May 1, 2026—one at the Atkinson Primary School which included farmers from Atkinson, Bataca, Antrizile, Concord, and nearby hamlets—and the other at the Salybia Primary School for farmers from the Kalinago Territory, including Sineku, Bataka, Crayfish River, St. Cyr, Gaulette River, and Mahaut River. These meetings were organised through the collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Blue and Green Economy.

At the meetings, the Ministries interacted with the farmers and listened to how they were affected and the challenges that they are currently facing because of the weather system that happened on Sunday, April 26, 2026. Among the challenges mentioned were those relating to drainage systems, flooding, and landslides, which the Ministry took note of and delved deeper into measures to be taken to provide relief.
The Environmental Ministry shared that the engagements with the affected communities will continue in order to ensure that the Government delivers support that is targeted and effective.
This is only the beginning. We will continue the dialogue and deepen our assessments to ensure that Government support is targeted, responsive, and effective, meeting the real needs of our farming communities, shared the Ministry.
Highlights of the sessions were shared in the Ministry’s page on Facebook where the Ministry has reaffirmed its commitment to the farmers stating, “Together, we are working to strengthen resilience, restore livelihoods, and support sustainable agriculture across the Kalinago Territory and beyond.”
