Over 80 patients to receive cataract surgeries in Dominica | Dominica News

Patients in Dominica will benefit from cataract surgeries through the MMI mission, improving vision, independence and access to specialized eye care services.

Dominica: Medical Mission International (MMI) has officially returned to Dominica for its second mission with the aim of performing more than 60 eye surgeries. The medical mission will take place for two weeks at the Brenda Strafford Foundation Eye Centre at the Dominica China Friendship Hospital, running from June 10 to June 24, 2026.

This undertaken mission is a collaborative effort between the Government of Dominica through the Ministry of Health, Wellness and Social Services, the Dominica Hospitals Authority and the Rotary Club of Dominica.

According to the Dominica Hospitals Authority (DHA), the team from MMI along with staff from the DHA will perform contract surgeries to about 80 pre-selected patients with the aim of restoring clear vision and improving the patient’s independence and quality of life.

In an interview with the media, Ophthalmologist Dr. Ralph Crew stated that the team is anticipating carrying out the mission and helping the citizens to regain their eyesight.

“We're looking forward, we were here last year, did the same thing and we're looking forward to continuing relationships with the hospital and the people of Dominica,” stated the MMI Ophthalmologist.

The Minister of Health Wellness and Social Services, Cassanni Laville, was seen announcing the MMI team’s arrival in Dominica during the Press Conference last week Wednesday, June 10, where he publicly welcomed them and extended his gratitude to MMI and the Rotary Club of Dominica for their commitment to improving specialised care to the citizens of Dominica.

Minister Cassanni Laville stated, “Firstly, we are very delighted to welcome back Medical Mission International, MMI, whose team has arrived in Dominica for a two-week mission. This mission builds on the success of the first MMI mission last year during which some 80 sight restoring surgeries were completed.”

Extending his gratitude, he added, “We extend sincere appreciation to MMI and the Rotary Club of Dominica for facilitating this partnership and all members of our local health team for their continued commitment towards improving access to specialized care for our people.”

The Dominica Hospitals Authority has also thanked MMI for their continued commitment, sharing that their dedication continues to make a “meaningful difference by restoring sight and bringing renewed hope to many individuals and families.”
