Dominica’s Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has paid tribute to Mighty Sparrow, praising the calypso legend’s influence and storytelling across the Caribbean.
Dominica: Prime Minister Dr. Roosevelt Skerrit has joined people across the region in mourning, following the passing of Slinger Francisco, the legendary Mighty Sparrow. Slinger Francisco passed away on Sunday, September 27, 2026, at the age of 91, following a brief illness.
Upon hearing news of his death, Prime Minister Skerrit took to Facebook to speak of the legacy of the Mighty Sparrow and convey his condolences.
In his tribute shared, Dr. Skerrit remembered Francisco as one of the "greatest storytellers" in the Caribbean, praising his extraordinary, sharp wit and his unmatched ability to capture the history, humour, and everyday experiences of Caribbean people.
"I join the people of Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada and the wider Caribbean in mourning the passing of Slinger Francisco, the legendary Mighty Sparrow. He was one of our greatest storytellers, capturing our history, humour and the everyday experiences of our people with an extraordinary, sharp wit," shared the Prime Minister.
He spoke of the impact Francisco had on many people through his work and the artistes he inspired, sharing that the legacy he left behind will continue for many years to come.
"His passing is a tremendous loss to our region, but his legacy will live on in the many artistes he inspired and the remarkable body of work he leaves behind," Skerrit expressed.
Skerrit went on to extend his heartfelt condolences, to the Mighty Sparrow's family, loved ones and fans during this difficult time.
