Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit marked the ninth anniversary of Hurricane Maria, remembering those who died and highlighting Dominica’s recovery and resilience
Dominica: Prime Minister Dr. Roosevelt Skerrit has shared a tribute remembering Hurricane Maria, which had devastated Dominica nine years ago on September 18, 2017. The Category 5 hurricane caused severe widespread destruction to the island, including loss of lives, homes, properties and businesses.
On its ninth anniversary yesterday, Prime Minister Skerrit shared a heart-warming message on his official Facebook page, honouring the lives lost and remembering the strength and resilience of the Dominican people in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria.
"Nine years ago today, Hurricane Maria struck Dominica, leaving widespread destruction in its wake. We remember the lives lost and the families and communities that awoke to a country devastated almost beyond recognition," shared the Prime Minister.
He further stated, "But September 18 is also a reminder of the strength of the Dominican people. We picked ourselves up. We helped our neighbours. We rebuilt our homes, schools, health facilities, roads and communities. And through every challenge since, we have continued the work of building a stronger, safer and more resilient Dominica."
Skerrit has expressed gratitude to all who supported Dominica during its difficult time and encouraged the people of Dominica to remain united in strengthening the nation to face the challenges ahead.
"Today, I honour every Dominican who contributed to our recovery, including those at home and abroad, our regional and international partners, first responders, volunteers and all who stood with us. May we never forget those we lost. May we remain grateful for how far we have come. And may we continue, together, to build a Dominica capable of withstanding the challenges of tomorrow. God bless our people and God bless the Commonwealth of Dominica," Skerrit added.
Recalling the devastating event, many citizens were seen taking to the comment section, each reflecting on the profound impact Hurricane Maria had on Dominica and its people and expressing solidarity with those who lost loved ones in the disaster.
A Facebook user under Cheryl Plummer shared, " This was a very sad time. I am sympathizing with those who lost not only their homes and other assets but especially with those that lost loved ones."
Another user also commented, "Maria will always remain a scar on Dominica. It will never be forgotten, and we pray nothing of that scale hits Dominica ever again."
