President Sylvanie Burton will represent Dominica at the UN General Assembly in New York, where she is expected to deliver the country’s national statement.
Dominica: The President of the Commonwealth of Dominica, Sylvanie Burton, is set to participate at the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly held under the theme “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All.” The 81st session is being held in New York City, having officially commenced on September 8, 2026.
This information was released by the Office of the President which shared that President Sylvanie Burton will travel to New York this Saturday, September 19, 2026, and return to the Nature Island on Thursday, September 24, 2026.
During her time in New York, the President will engage with world leaders as they address pressing international issues. Moreover, with the General Debate scheduled to commence on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, Burton will be seen delivering Dominica's national statement. The General Debate will conclude on September 28, 2026.
In her address, Sylvanie Burton will outline Dominica's position on key issues confronting the international community and reaffirm the country's commitment to multilateral cooperation, peace, sustainable development and climate action.
According to the Office of the President, her remarks will also underscore the need to translate international commitments into tangible outcomes that improve people's lives.
First Gentleman Gilbert Burton will accompany President Burton on the trip. Moreover, the delegation will also include the Minister for Foreign Affairs, International Business, Trade and Energy, Dr. Vince Henderson; Dominica’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Philbert Aaron; Deputy Permanent Representative Kelver Darroux; Sheldon Peter Anthony; and other members of the staff of Dominica’s UN Mission.
The Office of the President has announced that Josette Matthew will serve as Acting President during Burton's absence during the UN General Assembly.
