Robert Bridget has won the 2026 National Chess Championship in Dominica after two weekends of play, with Nigel K. Francis second and Romel Laudat third.
Dominica: The 2026 National Chess Competition has concluded in Dominica after a two-weekend long battle with Dominica’s finest chess players. The tournament took place on April 11-12 and April 18-19, where Robert Bridget has been crowned the 2026 chess champion.
On Thursday, April 23, 2026, the Dominica Chess Federation (DCF) announced that it has closed the 2026 National Chess Championship, awarding the first place to Robert Bridget, former winner of the 2024 National Chess Championship.
A total of eight of the country’s top talents participated in this national championship, including defending champion Larry K. Thomas and former national champion Nigel K. Francis (2022 & 2023).
The tournament took place over the course of two weekends, with the opening matches taking place from April 11 to April 12, 2026, and the final matches on April 18 to April 19, 2026. Matches were played at the Dominica Olympic Committee’s office in Bathe Estate.
The players competed with creativity and tactical brilliance, each with the goal of securing the win. Following the intense two weekend-long matches, Robert Bridet emerged victorious.
The second place went to candidate master Nigel K. Francis, while the third place was secured by Romel Laudat securing.
The Dominica Chess Federation shared the event highlights on Facebook where it congratulated the winners and participants for their perseverance during the matches. The Federation stated that the players were at the top of their game, each demonstrating the level of skill and talent found in the country’s chess community.

On their post, the Chess Federation captioned, “The championship was marked by tough battles across the boards, with players demonstrating resilience, creativity, and tactical brilliance. Each round brought suspense and brilliant performances, reflecting the growing depth of talent in Dominica’s chess community.”
Congratulating winner Robert Bridet, the Federation wrote, “His consistency and sharp play distinguished him in a field of formidable competitors.”
DCF has also extended their gratitude to their partners, the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China Chinese Embassy in Dominica, Big Edge Financial Express, Dominica Olympic Committee, National Co-operative Credit Union Limited and West Coast Co-operative Credit Union, for their cooperation in making the 2026 National Chess Championship a success.
