Hazy skies, poor air quality and reduced visibility expected as Saharan dust affects Dominica; showers and thunderstorms likely by weekend.
Dominica: The country is set to experience a Saharan dust layer over the next coming days, resulting in hazy skies, poor air quality and reduced visibility. The Saharan dust is currently surging ahead of an approaching tropical wave moving westward, and according to the forecast, the dust will suppress the storm’s development, though rain chances will still increase as it passes.
This is according to the 3-day weather forecast shared by the Dominica Meteorological Service on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, with the forecast set to last until Saturday, June 6, 2026.
The Dominica Meteorological Service has informed the citizens that they should look out for the dust layer, advising people with respiratory sensitivities to take caution and the fisher folks to take navigational devices along with them due to a reduction in visibility which can create challenging conditions while at sea.
The Communication Officer at the Office of Disaster Management, Carlisle Jno Baptiste, was also seen addressing the upcoming weather conditions where he advised Dominicans to limit their outdoor activities.
Everyone is encouraged to limit prolonged outdoor activities where possible while people with asthma, allergies or other respiratory conditions should take extra precautions to avoid health complications, stated the Communications Officer at the ODM.
He reported that sea conditions will remain moderate in the next 24 hours, with waves ranging from 3 to 7 feet along the west and east coast.
Dominica Met has shared that, on Friday and Saturday, the weather will be if no threat, with both days set to experience cloudy, hazy and breezy conditions with scattered showers and possible thunderstorms. For Friday, the citizens will see isolated thunderstorms in the afternoon, while on Saturday, the thunderstorms are expected to be in the morning.
