Six more families in Canefield East will receive climate-resilient homes as Dominica expands its housing programme beyond the initial 11 units.
Dominica: More families in Canefield East will benefit from the Government's housing programme as six additional modern and climate-resilient homes are set to be handed over to vulnerable families in the community. These homes form part of the Government of Dominica's greater commitment to deliver more than 215 homes to nine communities across Dominica.
This announcement was made by Cassanni Laville, the Parliamentary Representative of the Mahaut Constituency, during a ceremony last Friday, September 4, 2026, marking the handover of 11 homes to beneficiaries in Canefield East area.
In his address, the Parliamentary Representative shared that the additional 6 units will be handed over to families soon.
Today is not the end of the housing programme in Canefield East, my friends. It is, in fact, another beginning. Eleven today, six more to come immediately thereafter, announced Parliamentary Representative Laville.
He went on to add that the Government's initial plan was to deliver a total of 17 housing units in the Canefield area.
The truth is, this development was envisioned for 17 homes and today, we hand over 11. This means six remain and we are moving forward with the additional six units so that more families can get the opportunity, stated the Representative.
Cassanni further revealed that the Government is looking to expand beyond the six homes, sharing that the availability of land in the community has created a scope for further housing solutions for residents.
I want us to think even bigger than the six. There's plenty more land available in Canefield East. And not just that, the subdivision, it has already been approved. That gives us an opportunity to pursue, therefore, different housing solutions for the people of this constituency and the wonderful and deserving people of Dominica.
Prime Minister Dr. Roosevelt Skerrit has also spoken of this significant housing investment undertaken by the Government during his address at the previous live Press Conference on Wednesday, September 9, 2026.
Sharing that every Dominican deserves a safe and comfortable place to live, the Prime Minister said the Government remains committed to addressing housing needs and ensuring families have access to quality housing.
We are proud of our housing program. It is about giving families greater stability, creating safer living conditions and ensuring that more Dominicans share in the country's progress. Despite the criticisms, we will continue to press ahead because we know the difference a safe and secure home can make in the lives of our people, asserted the Prime Minister.
A few citizens have praised the ongoing investment and encouraged the Government of Dominica to continue supporting the vulnerable.
