Soufrière celebrated the return of Marine Reserve Day after eight years, bringing together over 200 students to promote marine conservation and sustainability.
Dominica: The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Blue and Green Economy has announced that the Soufriere Scotts Head Marine Reserve (SSMR) Day officially returned to Dominica on Thursday, June 25, 2026, with the theme “A Healthy Ecosystem that supports our Needs”, marking its first full celebration since the devastating passage of Hurricane Maria in 2017.
SSMR Day 2026 brought together more than 200 enthusiastic local students who gathered on the church grounds in Soufrière for a day filled with interactive learning and activities, art and craft work, whale watching and friendly competitions where Goodwill Primary School emerged as the overall champions, winning a laptop computer which will support their school activities.
Moreover, the students were also taught about the importance of protecting the marine environment to build environment awareness and encourage responsible behaviours from an early age and to also encourage sustainable practices that will preserve the valuable resources for future generations.
The Ministry of Agriculture shared picture highlights of the SSMR Day 2026 on its official Facebook page, notifying the general public of its return with the caption, “After a long break since the passage of Hurricane Maria in 2017, the Soufriere Scotts Head Marine Reserve Day made an exciting return on June 25th in Soufrière.”
